Creative Space collaborated with highly-respected global architect Selldorf Architects for this sprawling Arts District complex for Zurich-based gallerist Hauser & Wirth. Sited in a former flour mill, the project, which spans galleries, offices, a bookstore, shop, restaurant, garden, and a multitude of public spaces, has been recognized for its clarity of vision and programmatic aptitude. Our job was to balance multiple often competing needs: existing building conditions, the owner's requirements, a constrained budget, and a tight schedule. Creative Space served as broker, developer, and executive architect, and spent years translating theoretical architectural ideas and complex property-related dynamics into a vibrant and productive arts center. Since its opening, the project has been recognized by the national and international press, and received the Los Angeles Conservancy's 2018 Chair's Award.

Our goal was to integrate the specific desires expressed by a global gallery with local needs specific to this changing part of Los Angeles; to introduce serenity which we did through the installation of the garden, complete with chicken coop and herb and vegetable beds as well as artistic friction which we did through maintaining the vibrant site's original street murals. Our role was as a bridge between multiple worlds: we connected the high-stakes formal clarity of Selldorf Architects' work with the lively seasonal restaurant Manuela; maintained the existing building's articulated street faade while massively opening up the interiors to accommodate work by artists including Mark Bradford, Philip Guston, and Alexander Calder.
